June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the vibrant diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and to advocate for equality and inclusion. At Yorkshire Smokfree, we are committed to supporting the health and well-being of all individuals, and we want ot shine a light on some important health differences within the LGBTQ+ community, particularly concerning smoking rates. 

Higher smoking rates in the LGBTQ+ community

Did you know that the LGBTQ+ community faces higher smoking rates than the national average? Research has show that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are more likely to smoke. With rates particularly high among LGB women and bisexual men. This stat can be attributed to various factors, including social stressors, discrimination, and targeted marketing by the tobacco industry. 

The impact on health

As we know smoking has well known negative effects on physical health, including an increased risk of cancer, heart isease and respiratory conditions. However, for the LGBTQ+ community, quitting smoking can lso signifcantly improve mental well being. This is especially crucial given the higher frequency of mental health issues amonth LGBTQ+ individuals who may face additional stressors such as stigma, discirmination and the lack of acceptance.
