A huge well done to lung cancer survivor Jean, who has become more healthy, gotten more active, and is enjoying life since she has quit her smoking habit - proving its never too late to make a change. We caught up with her.
What was your main reason for accessing the service?
My greatest reason was driven by health concerns, at the time I was suffering from lung cancer and was desperate to make any changes it was in my power to make. Although I’m now happily in remission!
I actually found out about the service from a friend of mine who’d also had a really positive experience with it.
Did you believe you could be smoke-free for more than 4 weeks?
I didn’t, what has surprised me the most is the strength you can find inside yourself when the chips are down. Change comes from small steps each day, that from afar look like huge leaps
Were you prescribed any medication while quitting?
Patches, very simple to use and very effective for me. I found them really helpful to staying steadfast when I was dealing with annoying cravings. I still use them from time to time.
Aside from patches, what else helped you through?
I used both vape (which was a really useful way to swap an unhealthy hand to mouth habit for a healthy one) and a nutritious diet and exercise regimen (helping me improve my wellbeing while getting active and enjoying great new recipes I’d never have tried before quitting).
How has your health improved since quitting?
I’ve been able to breathe much easier when I’m getting active outdoors, whether I’m going for a walk or run, this has been most noticeable. I’m also feeling a lot happier, more positive and excited about life.
What new achievements and hobbies have you started since quitting?
Being able to feel free to indulge in new hobbies feels like achievement enough; I’ve been getting into knitting and crosswords, to name just a few.
How has lockdown affected your quit?
It’s enabled me to get out into the fresh air and roam open spaces much more, I’ve been able to take long walks, jogs and push myself. I’ve also saved a lot of money! It’s important not to get negative, take each day as it comes and enjoy your little bubble.
What advice would you give to those considering kicking the habit?
Do it. Its never too late to make a change and do things differently, if I can do it so can you.
